Was a bit surprised to have a young man ringing the doorbell about 7.45pm.  A bit uncomfortable with cold callers in the evening.  He said he was from Young Offenders.  Thanked him and suggested dark evenings were perhaps not the best time to be calling in this area.....asked him to come back during the daytime.  Thought it best to report to Police even though it took half hour hanging on.  They called me back within 10 minutes and had checked the young men out and they are legitimate.  They also advised them to make their calls during the day time...............Felt relieved I had the door chain on as I dont often use it.

Received this email from the Chairman of Tendring Neighbourhood Watch:

To all on the NHW distribution list, please feel free to share this information.

Yesterday afternoon and evening the above person along with one other were cold calling on residents in Holland on Sea selling from the bag on his back, cheap dusters and other household goods. These cold callers known to us as Nottingham Knockers descend on an area driven there by a "gangmaster" and let off to go cold calling. None of them have the required Pedlars Certificate and all use a sob story as to why they are doing it, e.g. "Just out of prison, part of my probation", "Injured serviceman, part of rehabilitation" there has even been the instance of one, a teenage girl pretending to be deaf & blind. Off course all are lies and prey on the kind-heartedness of residents.

The individual above called on an elderly lady who politely stated she did not need any of his wares and the lady alleges he called her "A F......g Bitch".

The local coordinator was called and she confronted this knocker who could not produce any I.D. and became threatening towards her. He was later confronted a short distance away, this time  by the coordinators husband and a conversation took place, the knocker stated they were part of ten knockers who had been dropped off and their ID was kept in the van (more lies). The incident has been reported to Police.

I admire the coordinator for her actions although at the same time we do not want people to place themselves at risk but in saying this I suppose most of us would have done the same.

Info from Essex Police show that in the past in areas where knockers have been operating there have been an increase in burglary dwellings, the two may be connected in some way.

The first photo above was taken by the coordinator yesterday, the second photo taken from the Thorpe le Soken Community News and it appears to be the same person.

If the knockers do not have a pedlar certificate, then I would treat them with suspicion.

I have something similar to this and haven't as yet, had any door knockers. I know it's a bit "Ugly", but definitely helps.

We have a 'Notice to Cold Callers' sign on our door, but it doesn't stop people knocking.  We got the notices free from the Neighbourhood Watch meetings we attend. The notices are approved by the police, as well.

I'd point to it and ask them "Did you not see the sign"?  and just close the door 🙂

We have the neighbourhood  sign right next to the bell, but they still ring. I now look through the window, if I don't like what I see, I don't answer the door.

Coincidentally, there were 2 distraction burglaries on elderly people in Holland on Saturday
