As a few of you may have seen me smashing up my driveway wondering what was going on,
Iv'e had a blocked drains for 2 weeks and purchased 4 sets of push rods that i was able to push through 50 foot to "somewhere" under my drive way about 10 feet from the street. Anglian water came out and said the 115 year old manhole cover was actually under my drive ? ?
Managed to find it with help of a local metal detectorist and started smashing it up.
6"down i found it.
Took me 6 hours, two broken nails, a trolley jack and metal spike but got it open and managed to clear it.

Double checking it isn't blocking up again today and covering it back up.
Please don't cover your manhole covers up as it's a nightmare lol

Our drains like most share the final route to the sewer, but It seemed only mine was blocking to to the main manhole, that branched off going "uphill" to the smaller manhole the builders put in in 2006 when we had building work done..I had 2 packs of rods that seemed to unblock it if only for a month at a time.

It happened sporadically, but I just got on with it, but one day I also borrowed another 2 sets to give it a good push..All sets joined up went down my sideway, out to the front and for safety bending them to the right alongside one of my parked cars..Armed with big gloves I began to push down the outward route with a rubber bing or flap on the end cut from the sides of an old car tyre with its "bend" more like a snow plow but that in its self made it easier to pull it back as it folded easier that way, but, I pushed and pushed until it stopped, so I sort of pushed or jabbed it hoping not to break anything, worried but kept jabbing/pushing, then what ever it was began to move, and so more and more rods went in along with a slight lowering of, well, you know - lol - then I sort of felt it "drop" at the end then the brown "soup" began to empty in earnest.... I waited till the levels emptied and by now the branch from my neighbours  sewer was sailing by so I then gave it lots of water, and asking my wife to pull the chain (push button) in the loo and turn on kitchen taps and bathroom taps..

While running water down the manhole i started to pull out the rods. That down washed them with the hose, washed my big red rubber gloves while wearing them, then gave the manhole a good wash also.

I never did know what was causing the blockage, but has been suggested my or my neighbours buildingworks may have seen cement being washed down, then setting overnight.. Who knows..

Its not a nice job, but, then I managed to do it, thats all that counts..But, was called out to do the same at a daughters place where I started in her rear garden manhole, continued in her front "garden" car park, then into her neighbours garden where we had to dig the sides of that out to open it, then pushing from there into a main sewer where you could here it boom when it dropped the end of the rods into the bigger sewer..

I was 69 years old on that job, am 71 now.. but I know how to use rods - lol

would take far too long to explain why we retired 10 years early and moved here,
but never regretted doing either.
